One of our favourite moments of every wedding at Swanley Meadows - Tipi Weddings & Events is the ceremony itself. Guests gathering beneath the trees, music beginning, that first walk down the aisle and, finally, the moment you get to say I do.

And yes - you can legally get married here at Swanley Meadows.

As an approved wedding venue in Cheshire East, couples can hold their legal marriage or civil partnership ceremony here at Swanley Meadows, with the ceremony conducted by the award-winning Your Ceremony team from Cheshire East Registration Service.

So, if you’re planning a tipi wedding in Cheshire and would love to have your whole wedding day in one place, here’s how it works.

Where can we legally get married at Swanley Meadows?

Our licensed ceremony space allows you to have your legal wedding ceremony right here at Swanley Meadows before moving seamlessly into the celebrations in our four giant-hat tipis.

Most of our couples choose to hold their ceremony outdoors, with our beautiful old tree providing the backdrop as guests gather on wooden benches in the meadow.

It’s one of the most magical parts of Swanley - relaxed, rural and surrounded by the Cheshire countryside.

And because we all know we can’t completely rely on the British weather, we also have an indoor ceremony option beneath the tipis, so there’s always a Plan B if the weather has other ideas.

Once the ceremony is finished, there’s no travelling between venues or losing guests en route. You can head straight into drinks, photographs, garden games and celebrations while we transform the ceremony space behind the scenes.

How do we book Cheshire East Registrars for our Swanley Meadows wedding?

The Cheshire East ceremonies diary for Approved Premises opens up to three years in advance, so you can secure your registrar well ahead of your wedding day.

We try to make this part as easy as possible for our couples.

Swanley Meadows has access to Cheshire East’s live ceremonies diary, which means we can check availability and provisionally reserve an available ceremony time for you. You then simply need to contact the Cheshire East Ceremonies Team within 48 hours to confirm the booking directly with them.

Ceremony bookings with Cheshire East Registration Service are separate from your Swanley Meadows venue booking, so you’ll need both your venue date and your registrar confirmed.

Popular ceremony times can be snapped up, particularly for Saturday weddings, so it’s something we recommend arranging once you have chosen your Swanley Meadows wedding date.

What time should we get married at Swanley Meadows?

There’s no single “right” ceremony time - it depends entirely on how you want your wedding day to flow.

2pm is a particularly popular ceremony time at Swanley Meadows, giving you plenty of time to get ready in The Hideaway before the ceremony, followed by drinks, photographs and plenty of relaxed time with your guests before sitting down for your wedding breakfast.

Earlier ceremonies can work beautifully too, particularly if you want a long, leisurely afternoon at the venue.

When you book with us, we’re always happy to talk through the different options and how your chosen ceremony time might shape the rest of your day.

Giving Notice of Marriage or Civil Partnership

Booking your registrar isn’t quite the end of the legal admin.

Before your wedding, you will both need to give notice of your intention to marry or form a civil partnership. You can usually do this from 12 months before your ceremony and it must normally be completed at least 29 days before your wedding.

Importantly, you generally give notice at the register office for the district where you live, rather than automatically doing this with Cheshire East because Swanley Meadows is here.

There can also be different requirements in some circumstances, including where immigration controls apply, so always check the current requirements directly with your local registration service.

Can we personalise our civil ceremony?

Absolutely.

One of the things we love about working with Cheshire East’s Your Ceremony registrars is that a legal ceremony certainly doesn’t have to feel cold or impersonal.

Alongside the required legal wording, there are opportunities to bring your personalities into the ceremony through your choice of music, readings, personal promises and other meaningful touches.

You’ll receive guidance from the Your Ceremony team once you have booked, helping you understand what can be included and giving you ideas for creating a ceremony that feels like the two of you.

And from our side, you have lots of freedom to make the ceremony space your own too - whether that’s flowers around the tree, petals lining the aisle, live acoustic music as guests arrive or keeping everything beautifully simple and letting the meadow do the talking.

What if we don't want a legal ceremony at Swanley Meadows?

That’s absolutely fine too.

Not every ceremony we host at Swanley Meadows is a legal one. Some couples choose to complete the legal formalities separately and then have a celebrant-led or friend-led ceremony here instead.

That can give you even more freedom over the content, structure and style of your ceremony.

So whether you want to legally say I do beneath the trees with Cheshire East Registrars, have a wonderfully personal celebrant ceremony, or ask someone you love to lead the proceedings, there are plenty of ways to create a ceremony that feels right for you.
