Sustainability statement

At Swanley Meadows, we believe that celebrating life's most precious moments shouldn't come at the expense of the environment. As a seasonal tipi wedding venue nestled in the Cheshire countryside, sustainability is woven into the fabric of how we operate.

We'll be honest: we're not a perfectly sustainable venue. We use a generator. Weddings can be wasteful. Change takes time and money. But this business is being built with a long-term view - to become more sustainable, more wildlife-friendly, and more thoughtful with every season. Sustainability here isn't a trend. It's a journey, and we're committed to making steady, meaningful progress.

Grounds, biodiversity and landscape management

Planting trees and hedgerows

For every wedding we host, we plant trees and hedge plants across the land - creating shelter for wildlife, food sources for pollinators, natural windbreaks, and stronger habitats over time.

Couples can also plant a tree on the farm on their wedding day - a lasting mark on the land that grows long after the celebrations are over.

Rewilding

Areas of Swanley Meadows are left to go wilder, encouraging native grasses, wildflowers, and natural insect habitats that support everything from bees to barn owls.

Wildlife homes

We install and maintain owl boxes, bat boxes, hedgehog highways, bird habitats and large ponds. If we're welcoming people to celebrate here, wildlife should feel just as at home.

Treading lightly on the land

Our canvas tipis require no concrete foundations, no excavation, and no permanent changes to the landscape. When the season ends, the meadow returns completely to nature - soil intact, drainage undisturbed, ecosystems preserved. And when the tipis eventually reach end of life, they won't leave behind the demolition waste of a permanent building.

A seasonal sanctuary

We operate exclusively from May to September. For over half the year, Swanley Meadows becomes a sanctuary: grassland recovers from compaction, wildlife has undisturbed habitat during breeding and hibernation seasons, and there's no year-round energy use or off-season carbon footprint.

Food, drink and suppliers

We gently encourage couples to make choices that reduce waste and support the local area - without taking away the joy or creativity of their day.

Reducing single-use items

We encourage reusable or hired décor, fabric signage instead of foam boards, dried or locally grown flowers, and natural styling over plastic details.

Choosing local suppliers

We champion local Cheshire and North West caterers, florists and creatives wherever possible, reducing travel miles, supporting small businesses, and keeping money in the local economy.

Thoughtful food planning

Family-style dining, realistic guest numbers, and careful planning with caterers all help reduce waste while keeping the experience warm and generous.

Waste reduction and recycling

Behind the scenes, we focus on upcycling furniture and décor, repurposing materials from the farm and barns, repairing before replacing, and choosing quality that lasts.

We're also thoughtful about day-to-day working practices - balancing the efficiency of modern tools with the value of things that are simply more meaningful in print. For us, it's about balance and intention, not all-or-nothing rules.

Getting here

Guests are encouraged to share transport where possible. Our onsite shepherd's hut and camping accommodation also means many guests can stay within the venue grounds, reducing the vehicle journeys associated with offsite accommodation.

Community and social responsibility

Swanley Meadows is set in the peaceful village of North Rode, and we're part of a community that cares about protecting the environment, local livelihoods, and the tranquillity of the countryside. We work closely with community leaders and residents to understand and address any concerns quickly.

The venue has also created much-needed seasonal work for local people - including in event support, tipi build and setup, cleaning, carpentry and more. We love connecting our couples with local, sustainability-minded businesses.

Monitoring and improvement

We still rely on a generator. Large events use energy. Weddings involve waste. We're not going to pretend otherwise.

What we can do is keep asking: "What's the next better choice we can make?" - and make sure we're actually answering it.

In practice, that means reviewing how we operate at the end of each season: what worked, what created unnecessary waste, and where we can do better. We track the trees and hedgerow plants added to the land each year, and we're building a clearer picture over time of how the rewilding areas are developing.

Looking ahead, areas we're actively exploring include reducing our reliance on the generator, improving how waste is sorted and minimised on event days, and deepening our relationships with low-impact local suppliers. We'd also love to one day formally measure our carbon footprint - but we'd rather do that honestly when we're ready than tick a box before we are.

A wedding venue that gives back

Swanley Meadows shows that you don't have to compromise your celebration to protect the planet. Our approach - temporary structures, seasonal operation, and conscious partnerships - demonstrates that beautiful, memorable events and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.

When you choose Swanley Meadows, you're choosing a venue that respects the land it occupies and allows nature to flourish. Your celebration becomes part of a cycle of use and restoration, leaving the meadow ready to welcome both your joy and the wildlife that calls it home.
